California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Alcohol-Related Traffic Deaths Down

Alcohol-related traffic deaths are down 15% in California and state law enforcement officials attribute the decline to two tough laws that took effect during 1990. The California Highway Patrol said 2,120 people died in California in crashes involving alcohol in the year ending June, 1991. That was down by 363, or 15%, from the previous 12 months. Injuries totaled 59,021, down 9% from the previous year. “California’s growing intolerance of drunk drivers is causing people to think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking,” said Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren.
