New Zealand’s Famed Mt. Cook Threatened

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — The top could fall off New Zealand’s highest mountain, Mt. Cook, after an avalanche wiped out its east face over the weekend, conservation officials said today.
With another big avalanche a possibility, “it’s quite possible that the whole top could come off,” said Ray Bellringer, a New Zealand Conservation Department officer.
The 12,349-foot mountain, famous for its pyramidal shape, was left scarred by Saturday’s avalanche, which brought millions of tons of snow, mud and rocks crashing down a four-mile path.
