From Times Staff and Wire Reports

State Guarantees Hospital Bond: United Western Medical Centers announced that the state has guaranteed an $86-million bond issue that will help to finance an Anaheim maternity center for low-income patients. The bonds’ backing by a government agency underscores United Western’s turnaround from the financial difficulties it was suffering only three years ago. In 1988, the Santa Ana-based hospital system lost $32 million and was close to bankruptcy. The maternity facility, scheduled to open in October, would be able to handle 2,000 more deliveries a year for the county.
