ORANGE : Library to Seek Reading Grants
The City Council last week authorized library officials to seek grants totaling $115,000 to fund an expanded literacy program.
The library will seek a $35,000 federal grant and an $80,000 state grant to improve its “Partners in Reading” program, which was established last fall. Current funding for the program expires in September.
The program provides training for functionally illiterate, English-speaking adults. So far, 86 volunteer tutors and 37 students have been recruited to participate.
Library officials hope to expand the reading project and hire two more full-time employees to develop a program to improve literacy in the workplace. The program, which is housed at the Taft Branch Salter Annex, currently employs two part-time staff.
