IRVINE — A gunman who said he had a hand grenade robbed a bank Monday of an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a Mercedes-Benz, police said.
No one was injured in the 2:30 p.m. robbery at Great Western Savings, 5392 Walnut Ave., authorities said.
The bandit, who wore a mask, carried a handgun, Police Sgt. Leo Jones said. The FBI, which investigates bank robberies, said several witnesses reported seeing the man hold what they thought might be a hand grenade.
The man escaped in a beige Mercedes driven by a second person, witnesses said. The man is described as six feet, 250 pounds and between 20 and 30 years old.
