NEW YORK — Cardinal John J. O’Connor collapsed at a dinner Thursday night at the Waldorf Hotel and was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, officials said.
“He did not have a heart attack and it does not appear to be life-threatening,” said Lynn Schulman, spokeswoman for the city’s Emergency Medical Service.
Hospital officials said he was in stable condition.
The 72-year-old cardinal, head of one of the largest Roman Catholic dioceses in the United States, collapsed at the annual Al Smith political fund-raising dinner, Schulman said. A Roosevelt Hospital ambulance was the first emergency unit on the scene, and paramedics who treated O’Connor determined that he had not had a heart attack, she said.
O’Connor received emergency treatment at the hotel before being placed into an ambulance to be taken to St. Vincent’s, about two miles away.
