Assemblyman Terry B. Friedman (D-Brentwood) has been named “legislator of the year” by groups representing women and environmentalists.
The California chapter of the National Organization for Women cited Friedman for his efforts to preserve funding for family planning clinics after former Gov. George Deukmejian tried to make deep cuts.
California NOW also noted Friedman’s authorship of a bill to ban employment discrimination against gays and legislation involving abortion rights, child care, domestic violence and discriminatory private clubs.
The Planning and Conservation League cited Friedman for sponsoring laws that banned private communications between developers and the state Coastal Commission and that gave permanent status to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, which acquires land for state parks.
