The hard-rocking Stone Temple Pilots have soared past such high-powered vets as Aerosmith and Anthrax, landing on top of The Times’ Southern California hard rock chart with their album “Core.” It’s also No. 10 on the pop chart. UB40’s single “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” from the “Sliver” soundtrack, jumped up four places to No. 3 and could be the next No. 1 pop single. But it will have to weather the strong competition from H Town’s top-ranked “Knockin’ Da Boots”--which continues to knock ‘em dead.
