The story of Joseph and Mary’s search...

The story of Joseph and Mary’s search for shelter on the eve of the birth of Christ will be commemorated Saturday with the 7th annual “Christmas Posada,” a Mexican tradition at the historic Rancho Dominguez Adobe in Carson.

Sponsored by the Cal State Dominguez Hills Docent Class, las posadas is a Mexican Christmas tradition with dancers, caroling, colorful costumes, homemade tamales, other refreshments and, of course, breathtaking pinatas.

The las posadas ceremony retells Joseph and Mary’s search for lodging at an inn, or posada, in Bethlehem. The festivities, held on nine consecutive nights, began Thursday at the 200-year-old Rancho, a former seminary that now serves as a retirement home for the Claretian order. The entire ceremony is done in song, after which a pinata is broken and traditional foods are served.

Posadas were a part of early California history, an aspect of the lifestyle of the Rancho period,” said Miguel Dominguez, director of the Mexican-American Studies program at Cal State Dominguez Hills. “During the last century, posadas were one of the more important events at the Dominguez Ranch.”
