Al Mijares, superintendent of the Bakersfield City School District, is being courted by the Santa Ana Unified School District for its top job.
Mijares recently was interviewed by the Santa Ana school board, said schools spokeswoman Diane Thomas. The board is seeking a replacement for Rudy M. Castruita, who left in July to head the San Diego County Department of Education.
Thomas emphasized that Mijares is not the only candidate being considered, but she declined give a number. She said she expects the trustees to make a decision within a month.
“They want to move toward a good decision as soon as they can without rushing themselves,” she said.
A Bakersfield school district trustee said he believes Mijares is Santa Ana’s top pick, according to a report in the Bakersfield Californian.
Thomas declined comment on Mijares’ ranking.
Mijares, 41, took over the Bakersfield superintendency in January, 1993. He could not be reached for comment.
