Clinton Motorcade Delays Paramedics; Elderly Victim Dies

BANNING, Calif. — Paramedics rushing to an elderly heart attack victim were delayed because a freeway was closed for President Clinton’s motorcade, officials said Saturday. The woman later died.
California Highway Patrol officers prevented the ambulance from getting onto an interstate Tuesday while Clinton was on his way to the Bob Hope Classic golf tournament.
Doctors couldn’t say whether the delay cost 73-year-old Frances Jantzon her life, said Sheila Grattan, spokeswoman for San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, where Jantzon was pronounced dead on arrival.
At a news conference Saturday, officials from the highway patrol, the Secret Service and the Careline California Ambulance Co. said the motorcade caused a delay of less than two minutes.
