One of two prisoners who fell Monday night while trying to climb down a rope fashioned out of bed sheets in an escape attempt from the Men’s Central Jail has died, authorities said.
The man died at County-USC Medical Center at 9:38 p.m., said a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman. The other injured prisoner was in critical condition. A third prisoner apparently escaped, she said.
“There were 60 prisoners in the exercise yard on the roof and we’re checking now to see if anyone else escaped,” said Deputy Benita Nichol.
The jail break at the 441 E. Bauchet St. facility happened about 7:20 p.m., she said.
When deputies became aware of the escape attempt, they went to the area and found that two prisoners had fallen, Nichol said.
