SADDLEBACK VALLEY : Applicants Sought for Airport Panel
- Share via
Having failed to persuade city officials to take part in planning for conversion of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station Base after the facility is closed in 1997, the county is asking the public to help fill two empty seats on its Citizens Advisory Commission.
Applicants from Lake Forest, Irvine and Leisure World are being sought for the 13-member panel, which is involved in settling on a plan for civilian reuse of the military facility. The group reports to the county Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors.
On three occasions, county officials have tried to appoint the mayors of Lake Forest and Irvine to the panel, but they have declined to serve.
The cities are opposed to county control of the conversion process, in particular to a proposal to convert the site to a commercial airport.
