Ferguson Leads Eagles in Water Polo

Katie Ferguson had six goals to lead ninth-ranked Santa Margarita to an 11-7 upset over fifth-ranked Newport Harbor in Sea View League girls’ water polo Wednesday.
Julie Egus and Gina Gajdos each scored two goals for the Eagles (8-4, 1-0). Newport Harbor dropped to 9-4, 0-1.
In another Sea View League game:
Irvine 13, Corona del Mar 2--Nicole Huszcz and Jaime Pack each scored three goals for second-ranked Irvine (13-1, 1-0). Meagan Hardt and Karen Dahn scored goals for Corona del Mar (4-8, 0-1).
In the Century League:
Villa Park 8, Canyon 1--Morgan Meyer scored six goals for third-ranked Villa Park (12-2, 2-0). Kristyn Pulver and Camie French had the other Spartan goals. Jaime Miller scored for eighth-ranked Canyon (9-5, 0-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Costa Mesa 10, Aliso Niguel 4--Jamie Smith scored three goals in a Pacific Coast League victory for Costa Mesa (6-7, 1-0). Cari Howse scored two goals for the Mustangs.
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Pacifica 57, Garden Grove 53--Jaymee Pendergast scored 24 points for Pacifica. Teammate Tracy Downs scored 14 points for the Mariners (11-5, 4-0).
Katie Werdel had 18 points for Garden Grove (1-2 in league).
Santiago 48, Bolsa Grande 35--Veronica Cerda had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the first half to lead Santiago (8-8, 1-2) to a 32-11 halftime advantage. She finished with a game-high 28 points and 16 rebounds. Alina Ly and Mary Petrie both scored 12 points for Bolsa Grande (7-7, 2-2).
In Century League boys’ soccer:
Orange 1, Foothill 0--Stephen Gonzalez scored the winner in the first half. Orange is 12-2-2, 1-1.
In the Garden Grove League:
Rancho Alamitos 2, La Quinta 2--Freddie Farias tied the score for Rancho Alamitos (3-2-6, 0-2-2) to avoid the loss.
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 2, Edison 0--Ryan Deschenes and Ignacio Diaz scored goals for visiting Esperanza (16-1-1, 2-0), ranked third in the county. Nate Sikse had five saves, including a save on a penalty kick in the second half, in posting his sixth shutout.
