LANCASTER — A gunman shot and killed a 40-year-old man early Thursday morning in a traffic dispute, sheriff’s deputies said.
William Elroy Smith and his wife were driving back to their mobile home in the 1700 block of Avenue I about 1:15 a.m. when a man driving a blue car erratically pulled in front of them, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
After Smith and the other driver exchanged angry words, the other driver followed the couple home, sheriff’s homicide detectives said.
He confronted Smith outside the couple’s home while his wife went inside, detectives said. Hearing shots, Smith’s wife rushed out to find her husband shot in the chest. The other man fled.
Smith was pronounced dead at Antelope Valley Hospital. Detectives are looking for the gunman.
