Freedom vs. Security

* Re:”Even Tougher Love,” Jan. 29.
I am all for legislation curbing the freedom of minors. My only concern is, why are we not applying these laws to the entire population, even those old enough to vote?
If teenage curfews and anti-truancy laws are such excellent methods of crime prevention, why not use the police to make sure that all adults are at work when they are supposed to be and at home by 10 p.m. sharp?
Why not combat the epidemic of drug use in this country by allowing the government to mandate tests for all U.S. residents and permitting law enforcement agencies to randomly search people’s homes for narcotics and firearms?
Finally, we would have to oppress any signs of rebellion by banning baggy pants, nose rings, wallet chains and other such treasonous articles of clothing.
Then we could sit back and enjoy the crime-free nation that we will have created by abolishing only two of our three “unalienable rights.” Our founding fathers would be proud.
