Mission Honoring Lincoln With Exhibit

Just in time for Presidents Day, a special exhibit honoring Abraham Lincoln and his role in Mission San Juan Capistrano’s history opens to the public at 10 a.m. today.
Mission administrator Jerry Miller said most people know Lincoln emancipated the slaves, but few are aware that he also freed the mission.
A month before his death in 1865, Lincoln signed documents deeding the mission to the church after it had been seized by the Mexican government and sold to private parties, Miller said.
The exhibit features reenactments of the document ceremony as well as a presentation by Lincoln portrayer William Peck.
Artifacts and documents associated with Lincoln and the signing ceremony are also on display.
