* Re “Protests Stall Expansion of Zoo Medical Facilities,” March 7:
The Sierra Club does not oppose the construction of new animal health care facilities at the Los Angeles Zoo. We simply think the zoo officials should put the proposed new animal hospital somewhere else.
Mineral Wells, the proposed site of the new animal hospital, is a popular spot for residents of central Los Angeles. Generations of Boy Scouts have used Mineral Wells for camp-outs. Flat open space is at a premium in Griffith Park, and Mineral Wells is a particularly beautiful spot, worthy of preservation in its current state.
Zoo officials insist that Mineral Wells is the only possible site for the new animal hospital. To date, they have refused to consider any other alternatives. We think they should.
