Massive Food Bank Changes Its Name

The Food Distribution Center, which has provided millions of meals to needy local residents since its inception in 1983, has changed its name to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, officials announced this week.

The name change will “better reflect to the community what our mission is,” and highlight the group’s affiliation with the well-known Second Harvest National Foodbank Network, local chairman Dan Rogers said.

The Orange-based food bank collects dry, frozen and fresh food from manufacturers, distributors, supermarket chains, food drives, trade shows, restaurants and private citizens, and distributes it to about 300 local charities. The charities then feed the hungry through soup kitchens, pantries, senior citizen programs, homeless shelters and others.

Officials said the food bank’s affiliated charities feed more than 180,000 people in Orange County each month.
