LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. — A Pacoima man who had climbed a cliff to chase what he thought was a bighorn sheep died when he later jumped 150 feet into Lake Havasu, authorities said Wednesday.
The name of the 21-year-old was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The accident occurred Tuesday in an area known as Devil’s Elbow near Topock, said Steve Johnson, a spokesman for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department.
The man had been boating with friends when he went chasing after the animal, according to authorities. To return to the boat, against his friends’ advice he decided to jump into the lake from an overhang about 150 feet up the cliff.
The friends told authorities he landed in about 20 feet of water, Johnson said. He was gasping and quivering and could not catch his breath.
He then disappeared under the water and did not resurface, authorities said. His body was later recovered.
The cause of death was not immediately determined, according to Johnson.
