Edison Sets Aside Jobs for Welfare Recipients

Southern California Edison has begun a welfare-to-work training program for 25 applicants at the utility company’s downtown Long Beach office.
Candidates who complete the 10-week program and meet the company’s hiring criteria will be offered an entry-level job, said Edison spokesman Tom Boyd.
“The initial group of 25 applicants is taking a major step to changing their lives for the better,” said Frank Quevedo, Edison’s vice president for equal opportunity. “This pilot program will be used to meet normal staff vacancies.”
A total of 100 residents from Los Angeles County will participate in the program sponsored by Edison, the South Bay Private Industry Council and a Santa Ana computer training company. The program includes 40 to 60 hours of computer training and tips on punctuality and business dress.
