Irvine Co. Won’t Exercise Its Right to Take Over Planned Beach Resort

The Irvine Co. has notified the state Department of Parks and Recreation that it will not exercise its right to take over a planned resort project at Crystal Cove State Park, a parks spokesman said Tuesday.
The move clears the way for Resort Design Group to move ahead with its plan to develop a “first-class vintage California beach resort” on 28 acres within the park, between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.
The resort would be centered in a collection of beachfront cottages, with units renting for $100 to $400 a night. State parks officials in September signed a 60-year contract with the developers.
Some environmentalists criticize the notion of a private resort on one of Southern California’s most picturesque coastal parks.
When the Irvine Co. sold the land to the state in 1979, it retained the right of first refusal on concession contracts of more than 10 years within the park.
