Week Spotlights Frivolous Lawsuits
This week is National Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, designated by Gov. Pete Wilson and the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
Local activities during the week include the broadcasting of public-service announcements on such issues as protecting volunteers against frivolous lawsuits. The activities are sponsored by Orange County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, a nonprofit group that formed 2 1/2 years ago.
Chairman Sam Roth said frivolous lawsuits crank up the costs of the legal system, making it too expensive for many small businesses and individuals.
“The message is simple: Everybody pays,” Roth said. “We’re trying to counterbalance the attorney-driven environment. Every problem isn’t solved by a lawsuit.”
