Bay Time--Earth Day will be celebrated April 19 at the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve and Regional Park with environmental displays, events, music and food from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. It all begins with a 5K walk/run at 8 a.m., followed by a children’s race at 9:30 a.m. Information: (714) 640-6746. On April 25, the San Clemente chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will mark Earth Day with a beach cleanup. The group will hand out bags and supplies at the Trestles parking lot at Cristianitos Road and El Camino Real and at the San Clemente Pier. Work hours are 8 a.m. to noon. Information: (714) 492-8248.
ReLeaf Effort--ReLeaf Costa Mesa, a volunteer organization that has planted almost 1,500 trees over the last five years, is looking for new members. Plantings of 50 to 70 trees are done once every six weeks from November to June. Monthly board meetings take two to three hours. To sign up, call (714) 437-5874. The Amigos de Bolsa Chica is also looking for volunteers, to conduct tours through the wetlands. Docent training classes run on Wednesdays from April 22 to May 13, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Amigos office in Huntington Beach. Two Saturday morning classes at the wetlands are also included. Meeting of Minds--Jim Francisco of county Vector Control will talk about fleas, ticks and other pests at a free lecture sponsored by the Orange County Natural History Assn. at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sea Country Community Center, 24602 Aliso Creek Road, Laguna Niguel. (714) 487-9155. Coal Canyon and its preservation is the subject of the Tuesday meeting of the Sierra Club’s local chapter. It begins at 7:30 p.m. at REI, 1411 S. Village Way, Santa Ana. Dominick DellaSala, director of the U.S. forest conservation programs for the World Wildlife Fund, will speak at the meeting of the Sea & Sage Audubon Society. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Irvine Ranch Water District building, 15600 Sand Canyon Ave., Irvine.
