Don’t Forget Cal State System

* Your story about UC Irvine’s overnight program for high school students and their parents from Santa Ana reported that information was provided about academic and financial aspects of attending community colleges, private colleges/universities and the UC system. (“Building Better Bridges for All Students,” July 19.)
There is an important additional choice: the California State University system, the largest public system in the country. These Santa Ana students and, indeed, students throughout Southern California, have access to a quality four-year education at low cost ($1,000 per semester) at CSU campuses, most within manageable commuting distances. From Santa Ana, the CSU campuses at Fullerton, Dominguez Hills and Long Beach offer many classes no larger than in high school and taught by faculty with graduate degrees in their fields.
Interestingly and ironically, the companion story about UCI’s vice chancellor Manuel N. Gomez said that this influential administrator got his start in higher education with a bachelor’s degree in history from Cal State Hayward.
