GOP Senator Says Clinton No Reformer

WASHINGTON — Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) attacked President Clinton on Saturday for expanding government bloat and misleading the public over efforts to reform America’s education system.
“It is time the administration stopped promising educational reforms without actually reforming anything at all,” Coats said in the weekly Republican radio address. “In fact, they perpetuate the failing system by throwing ever more money at failing programs.”
Coats listed what he called ills plaguing America’s education system, such as declining school safety and test scores, poorly prepared teachers and high rates of illiteracy.
He credited Republicans with passing legislation to strengthen Head Start and trade-school programs.
“The Republican Congress has created new opportunities for American students to compete in the global economy,” Coats said.
Since last week’s budget agreement, Democrats and Republicans have sought credit for increased education spending.
