Some broadcast and cable programs contain material included in the public school curriculum and on standardized examinations. Here are weekend home-viewing tips:
* Today-- “48 Hours” (KCBS 10-11 p.m.) This episode of CBS’ regularly scheduled documentary series presents National Institute of Mental Health research on obsessive compulsive disorder and explains new methods of treatment. Also, “Annie Oakley: Crack Shot in Petticoats” (A&E;, 5-6 p.m. repeating 9-10 p.m.) This episode of the “Biography” series emphasizes the business acumen, litigiousness and political activism of the famous theatrical performer. * Friday--”Thurgood Marshall: Justice for All” (A&E;, 5-6 p.m. repeating 9-10 p.m.) This documentary is about the early legal career and historical importance of the first African American justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Also, “Cold War: Backyard” (CNN, 7-8 p.m. repeating 10-11 p.m. and Saturday 7-8 p.m.) This episode of CNN’s series on East-West conflict describes U.S. actions between 1954 and 1990 in Latin America--Chile, El Salvador and Guatemala. * Saturday--”High Fidelity: The Guarneri String Quartet,” (Bravo, 3-5 p.m.) This documentary about the classical string quartet is recommended for viewing in connection with the recently announced emphasis on arts education as preparation for university admission in California. VCR+21753. Also, “White Fang” (Disney 4-6:30 p.m.), a movie version of Jack London’s classic novel about a boy and his dog in the Alaska Gold Rush 100 years ago. Ethan Hawke stars. VCR+265244. And “Wolf in the Water: The Piranha.” (DISC, 8-9 p.m.), a documentary on the South American fish, often discussed in science class, that attacks in swarms, completely consuming the prey. VCR+412805.
* Sunday--”Alice in Wonderland” (KNBC 8-11 p.m.) This is a new live-action movie version of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel. Cast includes Tine Majorino, Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short, Miranda Richardson, Ben Kingsley, Gene Wilder and Peter Ustinov.
