Downey Calvary Chapel 21, Whittier Christian 14--In a battle of coaching brothers-in-law, Calvary Chapel scored all of its points in the second quarter and held on for a victory at Pius X stadium.
The game pitted Steve Randall, the coach of Whittier Christian and son-in-law of Fairmont coach Tom Caffrey, against Caffrey’s son John, the coach of Calvary Chapel.
After a scoreless first quarter, Calvary Chapel (3-1) scored on five-yard runs by Anthony Robinson and Matt Madrid, and on Jaime Banuelos’s 29-yard pass to Anthony Robinson to take a 21-0 halftime lead.
Whittier Christian (0-4) rallied in the third quarter when David Jones scored on a four-yard run. The Heralds closed to within a touchdown with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter when Abraham Santos hit Anthony Ruiz with a 14-yard scoring pass.
Matt Madrird led Calvary Chapel in rushing with 45 yards on eight carries. Jaime Banuelos passed for 116 yards, completing 4 of 15 passes.
Jones led all rushers with 118 yards in 25 carries for Whittier Christian.
