Five people were injured--three seriously--Sunday afternoon when a suspected drunk driver swerved into oncoming traffic on California 118 west of Moorpark and caused a three-car collision, CHP officials said.
The accident occurred about 3:25 p.m. when a Somis man driving a Mitsubishi Eclipse westbound on California 118 crossed the double yellow lines at a high speed and clipped a Toyota Camry carrying four women from the San Fernando Valley, said CHP Officer R.J. Hosking.
The Mitsubishi spun out of control and was broadsided by the Honda Civic of James Michael, 54, and his wife, Adrian, 54, both of Tehachapi, who were traveling eastbound on California 118, Hosking said. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Damon Mortland, 21, and James Michael were taken by helicopter to Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks with major injuries, the CHP said. Adrian Michael was taken to Simi Valley Hospital with major injuries.
Two people in the Camry--Michaele Martino, 57, of Northridge, and Rita Martino, 64, of Canoga Park--received minor injuries.
Mortland was placed under arrest at the hospital on suspicion of drunk driving, Hosking said.
