Foothill Tops the Nation in Softball

Foothill High, which won its first Southern Section softball title in eight years on Saturday, also will be able to hang a national championship sign on its outfield fence.
The Knights were chosen Monday by Student Sports Magazine as the No. 1 team in the nation based on their 1-0 victory over Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division I championship game. Mater Dei was previously No. 1.
Foothill (33-2) was No. 2 going into the game. Mater Dei (31-2) dropped to No. 3, behind Clute Brazoswood, the large-school state champion of Texas that went 34-0.
Schools in the East and Midwest still are playing softball, so the ranking is not yet final. But Mark Tennis, executive editor of Student Sports Magazine and Cal-Hi Sports, which produces the state rankings for California and national rankings for Fox Sports, said nothing will affect the top three schools.
