City Council to Vote on $183-Million Budget

The City Council is expected Tuesday to approve a $183-million budget for the new fiscal year.
The spending plan would leave a $500,000 surplus if expenses don’t exceed budgeted amounts. The fiscal year begins Monday.
“We’re anxiously waiting to spend the surplus, but we have to restrain ourselves” until after the state budget is approved, Councilman Tom Holden said.
Oxnard’s budget includes a $1.7-million allowance for a sweeping living-wage policy to be phased in within four years.
The council postponed until July 9 a discussion on the policy, which calls for contractors and vendors doing business with the city to pay employees at least $9 an hour.
Living-wage advocates are also pushing the council to pass an ordinance that would impose fines on contractors who do not pay the higher wages.
