A couple accused of chaining their 21-year-old daughter to bedposts for dating a married man pleaded not guilty Friday.
David Mata Avila, 53, and Guadalupe Mata, 51, were arraigned at North Justice Center on allegations of false imprisonment, criminal threats, and assault and battery.
Police said Giovana Mata called police after her father hit her with his fist. When police arrived at their apartment, the young woman was on her back, shackled around the arms and ankles with 30-pound chains and padlocks.
A pretrial hearing for the parents was set for July 11.
