Protestant Guerrillas Pledge to End Violence

Northern Ireland’s largest Protestant guerrilla group said it would halt its attacks and wants to rejoin peacemaking efforts.
The statement from the Ulster Defense Assn. -- which has killed more than 400 people in its anti-Catholic fight against Irish Republican Army supporters -- represented a potentially significant step forward in the British province’s decade-old peace process.
The UDA issued its statement two days after London said the group was observing a credible truce again after years of violations. But the UDA also said it would disarm only when its IRA foes did so too.
