Oceanside — A 46-year-old man suspected of drunk driving was arrested after he fatally struck a pedestrian in Oceanside Sunday night, police said.
The victim, a woman between 30 and 40 years old, has not yet been identified.
Witnesses told police the woman had been running north across lanes of traffic on State Route 76. One witness said the woman failed to look for oncoming traffic and was hit near the Interstate 5 Bridge by a 2013 Ford SUV traveling eastbound, the release said.
The driver, Michael Foxworthy, pulled over and waited for police to arrive. Following interviews and a police investigation, Foxworthy was taken into custody and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of driving while under the influence.
The woman was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment where she succumbed to injuries.
According to the California Highway Patrol, more drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in San Diego County this Fourth of July weekend than last year.
There were 66 drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI in San Diego County from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday in areas policed by the state agency, namely highways and unincorporated areas. There were 53 DUI arrests during the same period in 2015.
