Hathaway fire near Banning burns 3,300 acres, is 40% contained

The Hathaway wildfire that began Sunday has burned more than 3,300 acres and is 40% contained, authorities said Thursday.

The fire, which started on the Morongo Indian Reservation, has been slowed by increased humidity, allowing firefighters to attack flames head-on while shoring up hot spots behind it, according to a Thursday morning update.

Crews worked to stave off the fire’s spread to the east while they cleared burned materials on the west.

The steep terrain is making it difficult to reach the fire, officials said. As of Thursday morning, 16 helicopters and six air tankers aided the efforts of 1,483 people working the fire line.

There are no evacuations and no structures appear threatened, according to the update. The fire has injured six people and its cause remains under investigation.
