Amber Alert: Carjacked vehicle in Oakland now described as sedan

Oakland authorities said they are searching for a carjacked red sedan in connection with the kidnapping of an elderly man and 13-year-old girl Tuesday that set off an Amber Alert. Officials had initially said they were looking for a red Infiniti SUV.

Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said authorities had tracked the SUV to the East Coast, meaning the license plate may have been switched.

“It’s difficult to say at this time, but we definitely want to make the key point on the license plate,” she told reporters Tuesday night.

The California license plate 6JFM648 was believed to be attached to a red sedan, although police officials did not immediately have an exact description of the make or model.

Police said the carjacking incident took place at an Oakland Safeway at about 12:50 p.m. in the 4100 block of Redwood Road. Local media reported that a man was caught by a store employee stuffing lobster tails and rib eyes under his jacket before leaving the store and jumping into the red or burgundy car with a knife.

The suspect was described as in his 40s, 5-foot-7 and weighing 165 pounds. He was wearing a green shirt, blue jacket and blue jeans, officials said.

Oakland police on Tuesday did not immediately have the identities of the elderly man or girl, telling reporters that they had not received any missing persons reports.

The sedan was last reported driving southbound on Redwood Road. Anyone who sees the vehicle should immediately call 911, police said.
