Boy tells school his pot came from backyard; parents arrested

An 8-year-old boy who went to school this week told officials that the marijuana he was caught with was grown in his father’s backyard, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

After the student allegedly was caught with the marijuana at Good Hope Elementary, in the 24000 block of Theda Street in the community of Good Hope near Perris, officials alerted the sheriff’s department to the incident around 2:30 p.m.

Deputies went to the child’s home in the 21600 block of Pepper Drive and found marijuana plants in the driveway and growing in the bed of a truck, according to the sheriff’s department.

Child protective services took custody of the 8-year-old boy and four other children at the residence.

Authorities arrested the boy’s parents, Rafael Lopez, 38, and Yadria Lopez, 30, and charged them with cultivation of marijuana and child endangerment. Both were booked into the Southwest Detention Center Friday.
