Dodgers activate A.J. Ellis from the disabled list

Catcher A.J. Ellis was activated from the disabled list by the Dodgers, who optioned Tim Federowicz to triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.
Ellis sprained his ankle while celebrating Josh Beckett’s no-hitter on May 25, as he stepped on Drew Butera’s discarded catcher’s mask.
Ellis has played in only 15 games this season. In early April, he underwent a knee operation that sidelined him for more than a month.
A career .252 hitter, Ellis is expected to be an offensive upgrade to Butera, who has started a majority of the games in his absence. Butera is batting .216.
Butera leads the league in passed balls.
