Three-time Olympic champion Kerri Walsh has withdrawn from a beach volleyball tournament in Russia and flown home to seek treatment for an injured right shoulder.
Walsh and partner April Ross were leading 5-2 in an early match at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam event when Walsh stretched for a ball and suffered the injury that caused the team to forfeit.
They made the decision Thursday not to continue in the tournament.
“We’re just taking a precaution by going home and making sure everything’s OK,” Ross said in a FIVB video interview. “We’re hopeful and positive.”
The pair is looking to play a FIVB World Tour event in Norway early next month. The world championships are scheduled to begin June 27 in the Netherlands.
